Spotify

Health and fitness.

Staying Healthy or becoming a healthier person it’s not always easy but a necessary thing if we want to live happier and more fulfilled life. For this, in these times, you need to stay focused and motivated to keep yourself on track with your fitness goals. Despite the fact that sports activities as well as relaxation, mindfulness and recreational activities, reports a big increment in our overall health and wellbeing, we don’t always follow and practice the activities we should in order to feel better. The design team at Spotify is very aware of these facts and wanted to address the issue. So, we got together. Music has a lot of power for motivational purposes and we need to figure out how to use it to create a better experience for Spotify users that want to get involve into more fulfilling activities, feel more engaged and keep track of their goals. After some desktop research and user interviews, the first relevant insights came to light. The fitness industry has grown massively and some of us tend to associate exercise with a lot of gadgets, clothing, devices and other personal belongings. Like if there was the need to get very involved to actually get the benefits of an active sporty life.

So, for this challenge I felt we needed to make it easy for people that are not as involved in the fitness industry and finds it hard to follow all the trends. Yes, there’re a lot of them.

not everyone has the time or the will to get involved into the
fitness trends, apps, clothes, foods, etc”

Here’s the persona that came after the research that’ll allow us to focus our design values and make a more accurate design and user experience.

Luckily for Frank there has been a lot of research showing that moderate exercising can be as good for your health as regular and vigorous exercising.
For example, you only need in most cases:

75 minutes of vigorous aerobic work per week
or
20 minutes of moderate exercise a day.

To get almost the same benefits as intense exercising.

With this in mind we had to design something that could make running as simple and exiting as possible without all the complications of a life dedicated to fitness. We could say that we’re targeting a user worried about their health but doesn’t know how to begin or its not motivated enough.

Spotify modes

Music has the power to change our mood, help us achieve and relax easier when needed. But we don’t listen to the same kind of music all the time, and different types of music have different effects in our emotional system. Spotify modes will give you get better recommendations by allowing spotify to know which kind of activity you’re in. Expanding your library with fresh and new exciting music according to your goals and tastes. It will also allow you to track your times and weekly performance. Spotify modes is an inside tool, tailored for you and your way of life. Get better at it and enjoy the journey!

We’re going to make an example of the user flow and features with the mode for Running.

First of all, it has to be easy to access and integrated to the environment without compromising the aesthetics or the functionality of Spotify’s interface.

By going into run mode, you allow Spotify to know your tastes better and give you recommendations based on the music that inspire you to exercise.

You should be able to easily choose among a reduced but engaging features to make the experience more compelling, like your BPM to start the running and the time you want to be running to begin.

You should be able to control and activate the features through wereables if we want the experience to be complete, seamless and enjoyable.

And finally, it was very important to keep track of the user goals without making the issue a big deal, a priority or a challenge. Just by letting the user know how easy it was to make a change in their own behavior.

Spotify MODES is a simple way to start and keep the non-fitness user motivated to accomplish goals that are better fitted to their tastes and lifestyle. Simplicity along with a program that doesn’t require a full commitment but that allows the user to keep track on improvements, could be a perfect fit to engage users like Frank and make their fitness and music experience more enjoyable.
